Dr. Santa Maria was appointed as Dean (Ad Interim) of the Cizik School of Nursing in August 20, 2018.
She earned her BSN from the Ohio State University and MSN in Public Health Nursing from the Case Western Reserve University. She joined the University of Texas Health Science Center Cizik School of Nursing (UTHealth) in 2009 and earned her DrPH in Health Promotion and Behavioral Science from UTHealth School of Public Health in 2013.
Dr. Santa Maria was the PARTNERS Faculty Research Scholar and was appointed as the Dorothy T. Nicholson Distinguished Professor in 2016. Santa Maria is an adjunct faculty member in the Center for Health Promotion and Research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health, and was a Visiting Professor at the University of California San Francisco Center for AIDS Prevention Studies from 2016-18.
She has extensive experience in public health nursing particularly concentrated on HIV/STI/pregnancy prevention and adolescent health. She has served as the principal investigator and program director of research and demonstration grants on multiple NIH-, CDC-, ACF-, and foundation-funded prevention projects. Dr. Santa Maria has extensive research experience working with at-risk youth and young adults including youth experiencing homelessness using qualitative methods, ecological momentary assessments, mixed methods, and randomized controlled trials of interventions. She is currently conducting research on HIV/STI and pregnancy prevention among youth experiencing homelessness. Dr. Santa Maria is completing a randomized controlled trial of a student nurse delivered parent-based adolescent sexual health and HPV vaccination intervention delivered in the community. Dr. Santa Maria has previously worked with non-governmental organizations, Indian Health Services, and as a medical/surgical nurse. She started her nursing career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic and lives in the Houston area with her husband and three children.

UTHealth President Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, M.D. announced today that, effective August 20, Diane M. Santa Maria, Dr.P.H., M.S.N., R.N., the Dorothy T. Nicholson Distinguished Professor, will serve as interim dean of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Cizik School of Nursing.
