UT SPH Scholarships

Applications are processed by the Office of Academic Affairs and Student Services and awarded by the UTHealth School of Public Health Scholarship and Traineeship Awards Committee.

Scholarship Application Fall 2016-2017

 Application is now open - Deadline March 15, 2016

These scholarships are monetary awards based on criteria designated by the donor who created the scholarship. Endowed scholarships allow the UTHealth School of Public Health to award money to students each year. These monetary awards may be issued in one lump sum payment or throughout the academic year depending on the terms of the scholarship.

 Eligibility Criteria:   

  • Must be a currently enrolled School of Public Health student
  • Must be enrolled at the time of application for the scholarship and during the term of award
  • Must meet and maintain good academic standing  (C or better)
  • Open to part-time and full-time School of Public Health master’s and doctoral level students
  • Non-degree and certificate students are not eligible
  • All applicants are require to submit one recommendation letter from their faculty advisor
    • NOTE: Some of the scholarships require two recommendation letters. 
  •  Additional criterion varies with each scholarship  

Value of Award:  The amount of each scholarship varies depending on the funding available for academic year.  The award amounts range from $500.00 to $1000.00.

Use of Award: The funds may be used for tuition and fees, books, travel or research.

The  Office of Academic Affairs and Student Services will announce the award recipients no later than July 31, 2016 via regular mail.

General Scholarships

Carolyn & Matt Khourie Endowed Scholarship in Nutrition

Eligibility: New or returning student whose academic and career plans include a focus on healthy nutrition as a critical component of public health. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Catherine Tyrrell Campbell Scholarship in Public Health

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Dr. David W. Martin Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Julius and Suzan Glickman Endowed Scholarship in Innovation

Eligibility: Continuing student. Preference will be given to those students in the Innovation Program.  Award is based on academic merit.

Laura S. Moore and Don Sanders Scholarship

Eligibility: Current enrolled student in the Dietetic Internship. Award is based on academic merit.

Lauren & Adam Strauss Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Lu-Yu Hwang, M.D. and R. Palmer Beasley, M.D. Scholarship in Global Health

Eligibility: Continuing student with interest in Global Health. Award is based on academic merit.

Marion Zetzman Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Mr. & Mrs. Ralph T. Hull Scholarship in Public Health

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit.

People with AIDS International Public Health Scholarship

Eligibility: Returning master’s or doctoral student conducting qualitative research on Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or sexually-transmitted diseases with a focus on women, gender issues, or underserved communities.

People with AIDS Public Health in the Americas Scholarship

Eligibility: Returning master’s or doctoral student conducting qualitative research on Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or sexually-transmitted diseases with a focus on women, gender issues, or underserved communities.

President James T. / Nancy Beamer Willerson Scholarship in Public Health

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Palmer Beasley M.D. Travel Award in International Research

Eligibility: Continuing student working on important public health issues in a developing country of Asia, Africa or Latin American.  Funds can also be used to support travel costs of graduate students, post-doctoral students or junior faculty from developing countries to come to the U.S. to work with SPH faculty. Award is based on academic merit.

Reuel A. Stallones Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based solely on academic merit.

Richard M. Grimes Scholarship in Public Health

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

UT School of Public Health Dean’s Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing student Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Biostatistics Scholarships

Dr. M. Stewart West Memorial Scholarship in Biometry

Eligibility: Continuing Biostatistics student who has successfully completed a minimum of one semester. One letter of recommendation is required. Award is based on academic merit and need.

Keith D. Burau, Ph.D. Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing Biostatistics student with a preference given to student with disabilities. Award is based on academic merit. One letter of recommendation is required.

Richard D. Remington Memorial Student Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing Biostatistics student who has successfully completed a minimum of one semester. Two letters of recommendation are required. Award is based on academic merit.

Robert H. Bigelow Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing Biostatistics student. Award is based on academic merit. One letter of recommendation is required.

Robert Hardy and C. Morton Hawkins Endowed Scholarship in Biostatistics

Eligibility: Continuing Biostatistics student. Award is based on academic merit.

The Lem and Dixie Moye Endowed Scholarship in Biostatistics

Eligibility: Incoming or continuing Biostatistics student. Award is based on academic merit. One letter of recommendation is required.

Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Services Scholarships

Jack Kilian Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing student pursuing a degree in Cytogenetics, Genetic Toxicology, or Occupational Medicine. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Guy & Alissa McDaniels Memorial Scholarship in Oncology and Infectious Disease

Eligibility: Continuing student in the Epidemiology, Human Genetics & Environmental Sciences, who has successfully completed a minimum of one semester and has a background, training and potential for excellence in oncology or infectious diseases research. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Fred Annegers Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: A continuing student to the MS or PhD in Epidemiology program. Award is based solely on academic merit.

Leslie A. Chambers Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing Environmental Sciences student. Award is based solely on academic merit.

Marcus M. Key Scholarship in Occupational and Environmental Health

Eligibility: Continuing student in Occupational Health or Environmental Sciences discipline, who has successfully completed a minimum of one semester or new student with exceptional background, training and potential for excellence in Occupational Health. Two letters of recommendation are required. Award is based solely on academic merit.

Richard K. Severs Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a continuing Environmental Sciences student. Award is based on academic merit.

Roger Florky Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be an Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Health student. Student must partially support his/her education through employment. Award is based on merit and need.

Rufus K. Guthrie Scholarship in Environmental Sciences

Eligibility: Continuing Infectious Disease student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Susanne Savely Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing female student in the M.S. Environmental Sciences Program. Award is based on academic merit.

Texas Water Pollution Control Endowed Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing Environmental Sciences student who has successfully completed a minimum of one semester with background, training and potential for excellence in the field of Environmental Sciences. Award is based on academic merit and need.

Health Promotion Scholarships

Dr. Lawrence E. Lamb Scholarship

Eligibility: Student pursuing a DrPH degree in Health Promotion. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Dr. Oddis Calvin Turner Endowed Scholarship in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences

Eligibility: Continuing student. Must be actively involved in community service, demonstrate leadership qualities, and be committed to working in an African American community after obtaining his/her degree. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Ronald J. Lorimor Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Must be a PhD student in Behavioral Sciences. Two letters of recommendation are required. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

The Dolan Mullen Family Scholarship in Public Health Education and Health Promotion

Eligibility: Student pursuing a degree in Health Promotion/Health Education. Award is based on academic merit and financial need. Two letters of recommendation are required.

The Ginni and Richard Mithoff Endowed Scholarship in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences

Eligibility: Continuing student. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Management Policy and Community Health Scholarships

Lu Ann Aday Scholarship in Management, Policy, and Community Health

Eligibility: Returning MPH, PhD or DrPH student whose research focus is on improving quality of care and/or community health. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Polly Sparks Turner MPH, DrPH Endowed Scholarship in Community Health

Eligibility: Continuing student. Must be actively involved in community service, demonstrate leadership qualities, and be committed to working in an African American community after obtaining his/her degree. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Susan G. Sampson Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: MPH student who has successfully completed at least two semesters with demonstrated interest in community health assessment and applications reflected by a written statement of goals and/or thesis topic. Award is based on academic merit and financial need.

Vu Thien Scholarship

Eligibility: PHD student in the areas of Management, Policy and Community Health with preference for studies in Health Economics/Health Services. Award is based on academic merit.

Ronald B. Harrist Scholarship in Public Health

Eligibility: Continuing Austin student. Award is based on academic merit.

Brownsville

Serafy Foundation Endowed Scholarship in Public Health

Eligibility: Continuing Brownsville student. Award is based on academic merit.

San Antonio

The John E. Scanlon Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Qualified candidate who has a focus in Tropical Diseases. If an appropriate candidate is not found, the scholarship will be used to support a student who has a focus in Global Health. Award is based on academic merit.

Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio

Eligibility: Doctoral and Master’s Level – Must be currently enrolled in the Master’s program and in good standing. Students must be permanent resident in the 8-county service area and be involved in work, research or demonstrate a connection in current or future commitment to serve the San Antonio area and following Texas Counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson.
