Tests

Before you begin: Psychological, behavioral, and health oriented testing instruments are copyrighted just as books and journal articles are copyrighted. Consequently, it is often very difficult to find entire questionnaires online or through articles. You may have to “read between the lines” when reading journal articles to determine what the questions were.

Includes specific assessment tools such as the Behavior Change Dietary Assessment Tool, as well as a very good chapter on tools for dietary intake assessment.

Surveys to measure for quality of life during health crises, through stages of life, etc.

Search for Test Instruments in Online Databases

PsycINFO (1887 – present. (Ovid); UTSPH students, staff and faculty only)

Add the PsycINFO search filter to locate instruments included in articles and books to your search strategy to locate tests appended to articles.

OR look for the test name (or word from the test name) and appended.ab.

Very occasionally, a search of CINAHL turns up an article where the test or survey instrument is not only mentioned, but re-printed.  Also, you can search specifically in the Instrument search field in CINAHL.

  • Search the Test Collection
    The ETS Test Collection includes an extensive library of 25,000 tests and other measurement devices from the early 1900s to the present.
  • How to Order
    Over 1,000 tests can be purchased online and are downloadable using Adobe Acrobat. If the order information field in the test record says “downloadable”, and an e-order field appears in the test record, you may download that test to your computer following the instructions below.

Surveys from CDC, including BRFSS, NHANES, NIS, as well as SAMHSA, including Nat’l Survey on Drug Use & Health, etc.
This links to a compendium of federal statistics sites which utilize a variety of survey instruments to get the data.

Serves as a depository of instruments for purchase that measure the quality of health care. If not available at this site, they include links to sites where you can purchase the instrument. Includes information on the SF-36 Health Survey and the Sickness Impact profile.

Helpful MESH headings for the concept of tests and measurement include: questionnaires, psychological tests, psychometrics outcome, and process assessment (health care). Database may be searched using important words from the title of a particular instrument.

This database is an ongoing project of the Library & Information staff at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute, University of Washington.

Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research Measurement Tools
Affiliated with the Medical University South Carolina, this site provides descriptions of a variety of assessment instruments covering self-efficacy, medication adherence, coronary heart disease risk, quality of life, depression, diabetes and insulin resistance, patient-physician trust, neck pain, and stroke.

Individual sites with instrument descriptions.  Be sure to read any criteria for inclusion to determine if you need to assess reliability/validity.
