Fall 2018 'Launch into Public Health' Service Day

All School of Public Health students are invited to participate in a day of service to "launch" into public health practice. "Launch into Public Health" will provide students with an opportunity to step outside the classroom and into public health practice.

Austin campus:

The day of service will take place on Tuesday, August 21. In partnership with Central Health, Austin campus students are encouraged to bring school supplies on the day of orientation to donate to those in need. For more information, please contact Tosa Nixon or Kathleen Manuel.

Brownsville campus:

The day of service will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22 at the Good Neighbor Settlement House, 1254 E. Tyler Street, Brownsville, TX 78520. Students will assist with the community food pantry and kitchen while learning about nutrition and public health for the less fortunate. Dallas campus:

The day of service will take place from 12-3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22 in the Birthday Room at the The Stewpot Alliance, 1835 Young Street, Dallas, TX 75201. Volunteers will assist in painting bowls for The Stewpot Alliance's Annual Benefit Luncheon, Soup's On! Please RSVP at DallasStudentAffairs@uth.tmc.edu by Friday, August 10.

Houston campus:

The day of service will take place from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22 at the Houston Food Bank, 535 Portwall Street, Houston, Texas 77029. Please register here for the "Launch into Public Health" service day in Houston. Please also complete the Houston Food Bank volunteer registration form here

  • Attire: UTHealth t-shirt (provided at orientation). Volunteers should wear close-toed shoes and clothes appropriate to work in a warehouse, kitchen or garden setting. No sandals/flip-flops, extremely short skirts/shorts or low-cut shirts. Individuals wearing opened toed shoes will not be allowed in warehouse areas.
  • Description of duties: Most of the projects at the warehouse involve inspection, sorting, and repackaging of donated food items for community distribution.
  • Directions (from Downtown): Take IH-10 east and exit Gellhorn St. (exit #774). Make a U-turn at Gellhorn, stay on feeder and turn right on Portwall St.
  • Parking information: If space permits, you may park in the front parking lot. In the event of a large volunteer turnout, you may be directed to the overflow lot located behind the building.

San Antonio campus:

The day of service will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29 at the San Antonio Food Bank, 5200 Enrique M. Barrera Pkwy, San Antonio, Texas 78227. For more information, please email Debra Leal.

  • Parking information: Please park in any available parking slots around the building. Unless otherwise indicated parking is NOT allowed in fenced areas and in front of loading docks or entrances. Carpooling is always recommended.
