Elena M. Marks, JD, MPH, president and chief executive officer of the Episcopal Health Foundation, will give a commencement address to the graduating class of 2020. She is a UTHealth School of Public Health alumna.

Episcopal Health Foundation (EHF) is a $1.2 billion philanthropy based in Houston, Texas. The foundation works to improve the health and well-being of the 11 million people who live within the 57-county area served by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. By providing millions of dollars in grants, working with congregations and community partners, and providing important research, EHF supports solutions that address the underlying causes of poor health.

“When I first started at UTHealth, I thought health and health care were the same thing,” Marks said. “But I soon learned that medical care alone isn’t enough to keep most people healthy. Non-medical community conditions are more often the root causes of illness and poor health. That realization first took shape during my time at UTHealth and now we’re changing the conversation to improve health, not just health care and transform the way the health system works in Texas.”

Marks is also a nonresident Fellow in Health Policy at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy where her work focuses on health reform and access to care for low-income and uninsured populations. She serves on the boards of Grantmakers in Health, Harris Health System, and Community Health Choice. Her previous professional experience includes serving as the Director of Health and Environmental Policy for the City of Houston, consulting in the health care industry with large systems and community-based providers, starting and directing a successful legal placement firm, and practicing trial and appellate law with major Texas law firms.

In addition to a Master of Public Health degree, Marks also holds a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from Emory University. Read Marks’ full biography here.
