Jack Tsai, PhD has accepted the position of campus dean at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health in San Antonio, effective March 3, 2020.

Dr. Tsai is taking the reins from Dr. Melissa Valerio-Shewmaker, who is stepping down as campus dean after five years of service. She will continue to serve UTHealth School of Public Health as a member of the faculty on the Brownsville campus. During her tenure as campus dean, Dr. Valerio-Shewmaker has grown the MD/MPH program with UTHealth San Antonio, forged deep connections between the San Antonio campus and local organizations, and carried out valuable community health research and practice on a variety of health conditions influencing the Hispanic community, in particular.

Dr. Tsai joins UTHealth School of Public health as a professor in the Department of Management, Policy and Community Health. Previously with Yale’s Department of Psychiatry as the Director of the Division of Mental Health Services Research, Dr. Tsai’s robust research on topics related to homelessness, severe mental illness, trauma, and health disparities align well with critical public health issues faced by the San Antonio region and across Texas. He is currently appointed to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Central Office and serves as Research Director for the National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans. The strong presence of the military and veterans groups in San Antonio is a great fit for Dr. Tsai’s experience and expertise, and will be a significant force in growing the San Antonio campus’ ability in supporting the needs of vulnerable populations.
