Patricia Dolan Mullen, DrPH, MLS, has received the Distinguished Fellow Award, the top honor from the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE).

SOPHE's awards and scholarships recognize significant achievements in the health education and health promotion profession and outstanding contributions of veterans and rising stars to improve the health of all.

Mullen is a professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health and a University of Texas System Distinguished Teaching Professor. Her teaching career spans more than four decades, including 38 years’ service at the School of Public Health, and she is credited for her instrumental work in cancer prevention, patient education, health education, health promotion and disease prevention.

“Dr. Mullen has made outstanding contributions to the field of health promotion, both in her research and excellence in teaching. Receipt of this prestigious award provides well-deserved recognition of her many accomplishments,” Christine Markham, professor and interim chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences.

Much of Mullen’s research has focused on women during pregnancy and childbearing years, covering issues such as tobacco and alcohol exposure, which led to her selection for national panels, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mullen’s signature public health program evaluation course, the first of its kind for UTHealth School of Public Health, has taught more than 800 students over the past 25 years.

Mullen currently co-directs NIH and Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas training grants for UTHealth. In recognition of her work, she was named a prestigious Piper Professor for 2019 by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.

The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) is a nonprofit professional organization founded in 1950 to provide global leadership to the profession of health education and health promotion and to promote the health of society. SOPHE's 4,000 international and chapter members work in various public and private organizations to advance health education theory and research, develop disease prevention and health promotion programs, and promote public policies conducive to health.
