Swartz joins UTMB faculty


HOUSTON – UTHealth School of Public Health alumna Maria Chang Swartz, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.D., has joined the faculty of The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) as assistant professor, tenure track, in the Department of Nutrition and Metabolism. Swartz earned her doctorate in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences in 2014 from UTHealth School of Public Health. 

Before her faculty appointment, Swartz was a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Rehabilitation Sciences, School of Health Professions at UTMB as part of the institution’s Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Research Training Program. She is also a registered dietitian who has been in practice since 2005.

Swartz’s primary research interest is to optimize the quality of life for medically underserved populations through promoting adoption of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors by developing and evaluating technology-based health promotion interventions. Her research interests include eating behavior, physical activity, sedentary behavior, ecological momentary assessment, and just-in-time adaptive interventions. Beyond her research, she also collaborates with community organizations such as Light and Salt Association to provide nutrition counseling, develop culturally sensitive nutrition educational materials in English and Mandarin, and consults on research design involving nutrition and other behavioral change interventions for community-based grants.
