ASSESS refers to understanding your district’s population, needs, and resources.

• Our SHAC is familiar with the statistics for teen pregnancy, teen parenting, sexually transmitted infections, and sexual behavior in our district/area.
• Our SHAC has reached out to families and community members to determine priorities around sex education.
• Our SHAC understands the state and district policies governing sexual health education.
• Our SHAC knows what programs our district is currently using, if any.
• Our SHAC has identified resources available in our district for sexual health education.

SELECT refers to identifying an evidence-based sexual health education program that fits your district’s population, needs, and resources.

• Our SHAC has identified its goals and objectives for sexual health education.
• Our SHAC is complying with state laws around posting meeting announcements, minutes, and recordings.
• Our SHAC is reviewing evidence-based sexual education curricula in addition to health textbooks. An evidence-based program (EBP) is one found on the following list: EBP Selection Guide.
• Our SHAC is reviewing sexual health curricula that align with new Health TEKS which went into effect in the 2022-23 school year.
• Our SHAC held 2 public meetings regarding curriculum materials.
• Proposed curriculum materials have been made available for review by community members.
• Our SHAC has chosen an EBP to recommend to the school board.

APPROVE refers to getting your district’s Board of Trustees (or school board) to approve an evidence-based sexual health education program for use.

• Our SHAC has presented its recommendation of an evidence-based program (EBP) that aligns with new Health TEKS at a school board meeting.
• Our school board has approved a sexual health EBP for use in my school district. An EBP is one found on the following list EBP Selection Guide.

PREPARE refers to planning for complete and successful implementation of an approved evidence-based sexual health education program.

• Our district understands, and is in compliance with, laws regarding parent notification for sexual health education.
• Our district is complying with providing parent access to the selected curriculum.
• Our district is complying with opt-in policies.
• Our district is tracking the percentage of families who opt-in, opt-out, and do not return forms.
• Our district has a system to follow-up with non-responders to maximize parental engagement.
• Our district has alternative assignments for students who do not return parental permission forms.

Our district has developed an implementation plan that includes:

• An evaluation plan for the evidence-based program (EBP).
• Notifications to principals, teachers, and parents about the EBP.
• Identification and training of good sexual health educators for the EBP.

IMPLEMENT refers to implementing your evidence-based sexual health education program with fidelity.

• Our district is currently implementing an evidence-based sexual health education program. An evidence-based program (EBP) is one found on the following list: EBP Selection Guide.
• Our district is monitoring implementation completeness, teacher performance, and student satisfaction.

MAINTAIN refers to improving and sustaining implementation of an evidence-based sexual health education program over time.

• Our district has implemented an evidence-based sexual health education program for at least one school year. An evidence-based program (EBP) is one found on the following list:EBP Selection Guide.
• Our district has identified successes and areas for improvement during the implementation of the EBP.
• Our district has developed a sustainability plan and reported back to the School Health Advisory Council on the EBP’s progress.
