Event Description

The United States is facing an epidemic of rising food insecurity and diet-related chronic disease, resulting in trillions in annual health care costs and over 500,000 deaths per year. Consequently, policymakers and health care leaders are increasingly interested in incorporating nutrition services that respond to these trends into patient care. Texas has started to take action. In 2023, the Health and Human Services Commission published its Non-Medical Drivers of Health Action Plan naming food as its top priority. And HB 1575 (88R), signed into law in June 2023, allows Medicaid to pay for screening and case management for pregnant women in need of nutrition assistance. Additionally, several health care organizations throughout Texas have incorporated “Food is Medicine” services into their health care delivery and payment systems, helping to address the critical link between food and health for their patients.

Please join the Center for Health Equity at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health on Wednesday, June 5 from 12:00-1:00 pm CT for a virtual webinar led by the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation of Harvard Law School as we explore how stakeholders can build upon this work to leverage policy opportunities and address the nutrition-related medical, social, and population needs of Texans.  We will examine the payment pathways available to scale and sustainably fund successful models, assess nationwide trends, and explore current opportunities in Texas.

The webinar will be recorded and shared with registrants, along with webinar slides and materials.
