About

John Herbold is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, & Charter Diplomate of the American College of Animal Welfare. He holds BS & DVM degrees from Texas A&M, MPH from UNC-Chapel Hill, & PhD from the Ohio State University. His military assignments included: Senior Policy Analyst for Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs; Chief Scientist-Air Force Armstrong Laboratory Directorate of Aerospace Medicine; Vice- Commander -Occupational & Environmental Health Laboratory; Chief of Disease Surveillance -USAF School of Aerospace Medicine; & Chief, Environmental Medicine, HQ US Air Forces Europe. Dr. Herbold continues his practice focused contributions through graduate courses & assistance for disaster preparedness, emerging infectious diseases, and environmental health. He held an adjunct position with the National Emergency Response & Rescue Training Center; was a member of the Texas Medical Rangers (Texas State Guard); and, served as Associate Director & Director of the UTSPH CDC sponsored Academic Center for Public Health Preparedness. His work on the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board and Defense Health Board Military Occupational/ Environmental Health & Medical Surveillance Subcommittee was recognized by award of the Secretary of Defense Outstanding Public Service Medal. Elected to membership in the Veterinary Medicine Academy of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) in 2007, Dr. Herbold served as President representing 14 health professions from 2012-2014. His contributions to One Health were recognized by presentation of the NAP Nicholas A. Cummings Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Interprofessional Healthcare in 2016; AVES KF Meyer – James H Steele Gold Headed Cane Award in 2022; and, TPHA James E. Peavy Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Advancement of Public Health in Texas, 2023.
