About

I am the dean and M. David Low Chair of Public Health at the UTHealth School of Public Health. Although I have been dean since 2016, I have been on the faculty since 1986. My formal training is in both human genetics and statistics, and I enjoy large team-science programs. I am proud to have built teams of researchers that have made groundbreaking discoveries on the epidemiology and genetics of common chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and dementia, and rare single gene disorders. These efforts have led to more than 1,000 peer reviewed scientific publications, some in top-tier journals, such as Science, Nature and the New England Journal of Medicine. Some of our discoveries have translated into new drugs and practices that change health care and save lives. A frequent visitor to our state capitol in Austin and our national capitol in Washington, DC, I am privileged to advise a number of state and federal agencies related to science and healthcare. As dean, my goal is to build an environment and infrastructure of education, research and community service that improves the health of the population of Texas and beyond. My ambition is to see the School as a cornerstone of the continuum of health care beginning with early childhood prevention, improved clinical outcomes, and a sustainable high quality payer model that addresses the needs of a diverse population.
