About
Abdelaziz Alsharawy, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Health Economics in the Department of Management, Policy, and Community Health at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health. Dr. Alsharawy specializes in behavioral economics, neuroeconomics, and health economics, and his research primarily focuses on health outcomes and policy. He investigates the underpinnings of perception, preferences, and decision-making in contextualized environments that often induce strong emotional responses. Dr. Alsharawy's research spans risky, intertemporal, and social choices, aiming to (1) understand the instability of individual and social preferences across contexts and over time and (2) to improve upon nudge theory and policy communication that impact health outcomes. He uses a wide range of techniques including online, lab and field experiments, quantitative modeling, eye-tracking, psychometrics, and psychophysiological assessments. He has extensive experience in experimental methods and in integrating behavioral data with psychophysiological measurements. To comprehensively study the decision-making process underlying health behavior, Dr. Alsharawy is in the process of building a Neuroeconomics Laboratory here at UTH SPH that will integrate multimodal data recorded via eye-tracking, facial expression analysis, and biomedical sensors. Prior to joining UTHealth Houston, Dr. Alsharawy received his Ph.D. in economics from Virginia Tech and was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs. Dr. Alsharawy has published in PNAS, Annals of Biomedical Engineering, Journal of Economic Science Association, and other journals.
