About

Dr. Wermuth specializes in qualitative research methods, ethnography, and health communication related to sexual health and HIV prevention. She is a co-investigator for Houston’s National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) with over twenty years of involvement in studying local HIV risk and prevention trends. Her work examines folk models of illness, sexual and gender minorities, and high-risk populations including people who inject drugs, sex workers, heterosexuals, and men who have sex with men (MSM). She also conducts qualitative studies on diagnostic teaming behaviors, medical interpreter communication, community paramedicine, non-prescription antibiotic use, and dementia care, as well as the development of communication tools to support patient–provider interactions across these areas.
