UTHealth Houston, Baylor College of Medicine to collaborate on new HIV Implementation Science Consultation Hub
Published: October 7, 2022
The UTHealth Houston Institute for Implementation Science and the Texas Developmental Center for AIDS Research (Texas D-CFAR), a collaboration between Baylor College of Medicine, UTHealth Houston and Texas Biomedical Research Institute, recently received funding from the National Institutes of Health to establish the new Texas Implementation Science Hub to End HIV (Texas IS Hub).
The Texas IS Hub will support the Texas D-CFAR research theme, “Ending HIV and optimizing HIV health in Texas,” by providing comprehensive implementation research technical assistance and consultation to HIV/AIDS research teams throughout the country. Christine Markham, PhD and Bijal A. Balasubramanian MBBS, PhD will lead the hub.
“We are excited for the opportunity to serve as the Texas IS Hub under the Texas D-CFAR and pursue the important work of ending HIV, sharing our expertise in HIV/AIDS and implementation science,” said Markham, chair of behavioral sciences and health promotion at UTHealth School of Public Health.

“Assembling our team of IS and HIV/AIDS experts was a good reminder of the variety of learning and depth of knowledge located at UTHealth Houston and in the Texas Medical Center,” said Balasubramanian, founding co-director of the UTHealth Houston Institute for Implementation Science and the dean of the Dallas Campus of the UTHealth School of Public Health. “I know this depth of expertise will have a strong impact.”
The Texas IS Hub will provide consultation and advisement to 8-10 HIV/AIDS research teams over the next year. The Hub also will provide local and national trainings, curated access to implementation science theories, frameworks and capacity building activities like workshops and grant advisement.
“Our CFAR continues to expand its reach and impact,” said Dr. Thomas Giordano, Texas D-CFAR director and professor and chief of infectious diseases at Baylor. “Congratulations to the Texas IS Hub team; implementation capacity is a big need and welcome component to the D-CFAR.”
