Multidisciplinary Research on Complex Traits at the Intersection between Epidemiology, Genetics, Biostatistics, and Bioinformatics

Research

Objectives

Our aim is to identify genetic and environmental risk factors for complex human diseases and traits, including Type 2 Diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease, and more generally cardiovascular diseases. Our research interests include a better characterization of: 1) the biological mechanisms underlying complex human traits through the integration of genetics with other types of biological 'omics' data, and 2) the genetic architecture of complex human traits in ancestrally diverse populations. We are actively involved in large collaborative international consortia such as The Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium, The Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Program, and the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP).

Chloe Sarnowski, PhD

Chloé Sarnowski, Ph.D. completed her Ph.D. in Statistical Genetics at the Université Paris Sud in France in 2015 and her postdoctoral training in Statistical Genetics / Genetic Epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics at Boston University SPH in 2019. She joined UTHealth SPH in 2021 as a Faculty Associate and is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology. She is the PI of a K99/R00 grant from the NIA and is working at the intersection between Type 2 Diabetes and Alzheimer's Disease to explore common pathways underlying insulin resistance & Alzheimer's Disease.

Jeewoen Shin, Ph.D. is a skilled epidemiologist with 10 yrs of experience in computer simulation, data manipulation, and statistical analysis, studying infectious diseases and tackling public health challenges. She obtained her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook University in 2016.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology is designed to provide a breadth of achievement in the five core disciplines of public health, as well as additional knowledge and skills in epidemiology. The goal of this program is to prepare students to put epidemiologic concepts and methods into public health practice, contribute to research studies in public health, and interpret scientific evidence relevant to public health.

PhD Program in Epidemiology

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Epidemiology builds mastery of epidemiologic concepts, theories and methodology; and significant capacity for independent study. The doctoral program is research-intensive and is designed for students who plan to go on to academic or research careers in epidemiology and disease control. Students in the program prepare themselves to become independent epidemiologic investigators, and may acquire some teaching experience.
