Omowale Goes Global

Serwaa Omowale, PhD, LMSW, MPH, assistant professor at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in Dallas, was selected as a LEAD Global Training Program fellow. Omowale’s selection as a LEAD trainee allowed her to travel to Uganda for a 10-week program to gain the necessary skills needed to lead multi-disciplinary research aimed at underserved communities across the globe.

Researchers Find Nicotine Use Increased Self-Harm Ideations Among Young Adults

New research finds that cigarette/e-cigarette use directly increases the risk of suicidal ideation among young adults. Associate Professor Anna V. Wilkinson, PhD, with the Department of Epidemiology, served as the first author of the study published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research

Recent research reveals the dangerous lack of information available regarding exposure to extreme heat for pregnant women. Vulnerable populations are more likely to suffer from exposure to high temperatures, including expecting mothers.

Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes such as malaria, Zika, and dengue pose significant global public health concerns. Researchers at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health are responding by launching a novel mosquito vivarium to develop genetic strategies for controlling these diseases.

Recruiting diverse people living with dementia and their caregivers, traditionally an unstudied population, was successful through using electronic health records of patients and engagement with their clinicians at health systems, according to an article with co-lead authors from UTHealth Houston School of Public Health and Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
