Doctor of Philosophy
Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Biostatistics and Data Science emphasizes advanced statistical theory and application, statistical consulting, and independent research and prepares students to be independent investigators in the development and application of biostatistical analyses to problems of human health and disease. Graduates of the program go on to assume senior statistical posts in governmental, private health research agencies, industry or pursue careers in teaching and research.

Admission Requirements
In addition to the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health’s general admission requirements, Biostatistics PhD candidate applications will also be evaluated against the following considerations:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) in mathematics or statistics, OR a master of science degree (or equivalent degree) in the theory and applications of biostatistics, mathematics, statistics or equivalent
- Successful completion of coursework in calculus and linear algebra
Program Requirements
The PhD program requires students to complete 48 credit hours* as detailed in the Biostatistics and Data Science PhD degree planner. Most full-time students complete the PhD program in three to five years. All students are eligible to elect to complete one or more graduate certificates in addition to required coursework.
