UTHealth Houston School of Public Health El Paso Campus Celebrates 30 Years
As one of the largest and oldest Schools of Public Health in the United States, we are also the only accredited School of Public Health in the Region. With more than 175 faculty State-wide, UTHealth Houston has experts in every discipline of public health bringing unmatched research and educational opportunities to students and other stakeholders in El Paso. We function as one School, one faculty body, one student body. Students in our Region can earn a graduate degree in public health from the largest medical center in the world without ever leaving El Paso.
With so much uncertainty in our world - from extreme weather to a pandemic - public health preparedness is at the forefront of our lives. Now with any occupation, there is a public health aspect to the workplace. We are also living and working longer than ever before – with much of that due to public health interventions that prevent disease and promote healthier lifestyles. El Paso campus faculty and students lead cutting-edge research that translates to innovative practices. Our specific contributions impact communities from inventive patents that advance public health nutrition to safety protocols that help astronauts stay healthy in space. Most importantly, we work closely with our Paso del Norte community to learn what is important to them so that we can work together toward health equity.
History
Established in 1992, the El Paso campus of UTHealth Houston School of Public Health offers several graduate degrees including the Master of Public Health (MPH), the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), as well as different dual degrees with our partner institutions. Students may focus in a variety of areas such as infectious diseases, environmental and occupational health sciences, and health promotion. Our newest offering is an Executive-style MPH in Healthcare Management earned in five semesters. Whether investigating the cause of a disease outbreak, or identifying an intervention that prevents disease, or developing a tool that fosters healthy choices, public health makes meaningful differences in our lives.
