Dr. Yamal is the Director of the Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials at UTHealth and a Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science. He is a clinical trialist and data scientist with extensive experience with the design and analysis of clinical and diagnostic trials. Dr. Yamal is a PI of the Data Coordinating Center (DCC) for the NoNO trial, a Bayesian stepped wedge non-inferiority trial among children with congenital diaphragmatic hernias. He also leads the DCC of a cluster-randomized trial in schools, several trials of Food prescription programs, a multisite biomarker study in Traumatic Brain Injury, and the Multiple Sclerosis Implementation Network. He was previously a PI of PCORI-sponsored multi-site BEST-MSU trial, a comparative effectiveness trial of a mobile stroke unit. He was also the Principal Investigator of the Statistical Core for a NIH-sponsored Phase II clinical trial EPO Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Trial studying the effects of Erythropoietin on Cerebral Vascular Dysfunction & Anemia. Other research projects include work on the landmark NIH-sponsored ALLHAT study, machine learning methods in areas such as cancer prediction and traumatic brain injury outcomes. This has included the development of advanced machine learning methods to classify high-dimensional optical data. Dr. Yamal currently serves as a member of NIH grant review and DSMB committees for several multi-site clinical trials. He trained at Rice University and completed a postdoctoral position at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
