About
Fuqing Wu, Ph.D. has joined the EHGES as an Assistant Professor to lead the group of environmental and genomic surveillance of infectious diseases for population health. Fuqing Wu received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in Dr. Xiao Wang’s laboratory (Synthetic Biology and Systems Biology) from the Arizona State University, and completed his post-doctoral training in Dr. Eric Alm’s laboratory (Human Microbiome Engineering) at MIT. Infectious viral diseases are one of the leading causes of human deaths worldwide. Fuqing’s group aims to develop environmental and genomic surveillance of viral diseases to understand population health. Leveraging molecular virology, genomic sequencing, and biostatistical approaches, we seek to advance wastewater surveillance to monitor the transmission and dynamics of zoonotic pathogens in the community; track the evolution of genomic variants emerging in the population; and integrate wastewater data with population health data to identify public health issues including health inequality and disparity. Other interests include exploring the impacts of viral infection and antiviral treatments on gut microbiome and population health, and developing synthetic biology tools for infectious diseases diagnostics.
