Professor Samiran Ghosh, PhD, has been inducted as a 2024 fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), a prestigious distinction for statisticians who advance the field of statistical science.

"Being named an ASA fellow is one of the highest honors bestowed by one of the largest professional organizations of statisticians and data scientists worldwide," said Ghosh, Vice Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science. "I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition."

Recognized and nominated for consideration by his colleagues, Ghosh has exemplified "Outstanding contributions to statistical methodology related to Intervention Trial design and analysis, for being an exemplary ambassador for statistics in the scientific community; for continued excellence in biostatistical teaching and mentoring; and for notable service to the profession," as mentioned in his nomination. As a teacher, biostatistician, and public health professional, Ghosh blends years of experience and holds proof of his merit and background for this recognition.

Each year, less than one percent of the total association membership in the ASA are inducted as fellows.

Ghosh joins an illustrious history of fellows who commit their work to a field that blends data and the increasing need for promoting health sciences. His background in biostatistics, public health, medicine, and liberal arts provides an extensive skillset and diverse perspective to his work as a researcher and professor.

"In today's era of information technology and mobile data, the need for appropriate data analytic techniques is paramount. Without them, we risk being inundated with data but unable to extract meaningful insights in a timely manner," he said. "This challenge is particularly acute in the health sciences domain, encompassing both clinical and public health realms."

Supported by this distinction, Ghosh will continue his research to develop strategies and streamline the prospective planning and execution of interventions to ensure the efficient use of critical resources.

Joining the School of Public Health in 2022, Ghosh remains committed to training the next generation of data scientists and continues to advance the field to face current and future health challenges. Ghosh works alongside the Institute for Implementation Science and Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials at UTHealth Houston and is a founding member of the ASA's Statistics in Mental Health Section.

The formal ASA Fellowship induction ceremony will be held in Portland, Oregon in early August 2024 at the Joint Statistical Meeting, the largest gathering of statisticians and data scientists in North America.
