Almohamad receives $10,000 from the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition (GSCN)
Maha Almohamad, MS, who works as a Graduate Research Associate and is currently pursuing her PhD in Epidemiology, received $10,000 in grant funding from the Walmart Foundation, offered by the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition (GSCN).
GSCN has developed and pioneered nine new measures assessing food-security related concepts. In the measurement development process, they collected pilot data from 1,000 households with limited income and/or experiencing food insecurity. In Fall 2022, GSCN opened applications for three junior researchers to further examine this initial dataset with secondary analysis investigating novel research questions. GSCN selected Almohamad’s proposal assessing the relationship between food and nutritional security and diabetes moderated by SNAP participation in January 2023.
Although research exists around these concepts, Almohamad’s proposal will shed light on how diabetes, SNAP, and food security relate to household’s nutritional security status or, “the perceived ability to acquire healthful foods without resource limitations or worry” (GSCN’s definition).
Shreela Sharma, PhD, director of the Center for Health Equity and Jayna Markand Dave, PhD, associate professor of Pediatrics and Nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine currently support Almohamad’s research.
These additional funds assist with additional research efforts and fees for journal submission.
“This is an incredible honor and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team as well as the unwavering support we receive from our community,” Almohamad commented on receiving this award.
