Study assessing elementary school teachers’ health outcomes and dietary behaviors published

The study found that 32 percent of teachers reported being food insecure, indicating a chronic lack of access to enough food in their household. Teachers consumed less than recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fiber, dairy, and calcium but consumed more sugar than daily recommendations.

This is a collaboration among Harris Health, Brighter Bites, and Planet Harvest to supply fresh fruits and vegetables for expecting mothers at high risk for poor birth outcomes.

Brighter Bites, in partnership with UTHealth Houston School of Public Health has received $483,612 in federal funding as part of USDA GusNIP grants. This grant will help examine, assess, and address nutritional needs through the Brighter Bites’ home-delivery Produce Prescription Program. The program utilizes DoorDash to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to students and their families at four school-based health clinics in Galena Park ISD, Texas.
The Health Equity Collective celebrates 5 years of collective impact

The Health Equity Collective is a core infrastructure initiative of the UTHealth Houston Center for Health Equity. Using a collective impact approach, the HEC gathers stakeholders from 200+ organizations across sectors (e.g., government, payers, CBOs, healthcare, corporate) with the mission of establishing an impactful, collective, sustainable, data-driven system to promote health equity by addressing social determinants of health needs among Greater Houston residents.
