HOUSTON – Melissa Valerio, Ph.D., M.P.H., regional dean of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health in San Antonio, has been named deputy editor of the journal Health Promotion Practice (HPP). The journal is an official publication of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). Valerio began serving in this position in January 2018.
"Dr. Valerio brings additional strength and perspective to the community voice and Health Promotion Practice, which is the founding principle of this SOPHE journal," says Elaine Auld, M.P.H., M.C.H.E.S. "We look forward to her input and contributions to elevating health promotion practice."
Health Promotion Practice (HPP) is a peer-reviewed bi-monthly journal devoted to the practical application of health promotion and education. HPP focuses on critical and strategic information for professionals engaged in the practice of developing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion and disease prevention programs. This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Read more about the journal here.
"I look forward to working closely with Dr. Valerio as we both move into new leadership roles with Health Promotion Practice," says newly appointed editor-in-chief, Kathleen Roe, Dr.P.H., M.P.H. "Her concern for strategic planning, respect for rigor, and commitment to practitioner relevance will make major contributions to the use and impact of our journal and, ultimately, to health promotion practice."
Among Valerio's research interests are the development and evaluation of chronic disease self-management and health literacy intervention strategies. In addition to her position as regional dean of the school's campus in San Antonio, she is an associate professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences and a member of the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research at UTHealth School of Public Health.
Valerio earned her master's degree in health behavior and health education from the University of Michigan School of Public Health and her Ph.D. in health behavior and health education from the University of Michigan. Before coming to UTHealth School of Public Health, Valerio spent five years as a faculty member of the University of Michigan School of Public Health and served as associate director at the Center for Managing Chronic Disease.
