School of Public Health launches new accelerated master's program in partnership with Huston-Tillotson University
UTHealth Houston School of Public Health proudly announces a new accelerated master's degree program with Huston-Tillotson University. This program is designed to partner with universities to prepare undergraduate students for graduate education.
The accelerated master's degree program allows undergraduate students to earn their bachelor's degree and a graduate certificate in public health simultaneously. This path streamlines and advances a student’s pursuit of a master's degree in public health. The curriculum is specifically curated to introduce students to the foundations of public health, including biostatistics and data science, epidemiology, community health, and management. Accepted students complete a bachelor-level degree and a graduate certificate, both paired to prepare students to address the current and future challenges of the field.
This partnership marks the 15th accelerated master’s program available through UTHealth Houston School of Public Health. After successfully completing their undergraduate degree at Huston-Tillotson University, and graduate certificate with UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, students can apply 16 credit hours of graduate coursework towards a master's degree at the School of Public Health, dependent upon acceptance into the school. By completing the accelerated master's degree program, students can complete a portion of their master's degree in a shorter time frame.
This partnership also serves as an extension and expansion of the Gaining Equity in Training for Public Health Informatics and Technology (GET PHIT) Consortium, an initiative led by UTHealth Houston to recruit and train students in the field of public health informatics. Through various learning opportunities such as bootcamps, internships, and professional development, participants of GET PHIT develop skills and understanding of public health informatics and apply it to their academic and career pursuits.
Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson University was the first institution of higher learning in Austin, TX. The university has built a longstanding legacy of leadership and excellence in higher education.
“This partnership underscores the importance of public health in Austin and Central Texas. The new accelerated master’s degree program expands educational and career opportunities for local students and builds on our previous collaboration with Huston-Tillotson through the Dell Health Scholar’s Program. I am enthusiastic about helping to facilitate this academic pathway for Huston-Tillotson students. Pursuing this program is an excellent option for those with a passion and commitment to public health,” said Deanna Hoelscher, RD, PhD, John P. McGovern Professorship in Health Promotion and Regional Dean of UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in Austin.
Eligible students can apply for admission into the accelerated master's degree program through Huston-Tillotson's Department of Kinesiology and the Department of Natural Sciences. Students accepted to the accelerated master's degree program develop foundational public health skills while identifying which field of public health to continue their training in. With this newest addition to the accelerated master’s degree program partnership portfolio, UTHealth Houston School of Public Health further reinforces its commitment to advancing public health graduate education and research excellence.
