A note from San Antonio Campus Dean, Dr. Jack Tsai
Welcome to UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in San Antonio! We are dedicated to serving the San Antonio region, Texas, and worldwide in 1) preventing disease and injury, 2) addressing social and environmental determinants of health, and 3) promoting health and well-being.
Our campus has over 200 students completing coursework in the fields of Epidemiology, Environmental/Occupational Health Sciences, Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences, and Management, Policy and Community Health Practice. Our graduate training programs focus on preparing the future public health workforce in practice, research, administration, and policy. As one of the regional campuses for the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in Houston, we are able to contribute to our local San Antonio community needs as well as to national and international public health and population health. Our faculty are national experts focused on teaching and research concerning the public health needs of underserved and vulnerable populations.
Among our educational offerings, we offer the MD/MPH dual degree program in collaboration with UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine. This integrated dual degree program satisfies the requirements of both the MD and MPH degree programs in 4 years. As the first campus to offer this dual degree in 2006, this program has become one of the largest in the country and is now offered across the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health campuses. We also offer a 4+1 program that continues to grow in partnership with the University of Texas at San Antonio, St. Mary’s University, and Schreiner University. The 4+1 program provides a direct line for undergraduate students to enroll in and complete their master’s degree coursework in a shorter amount of time. In addition to these programs, we also offer MPH and PhD programs in public health as well as a unique MBA/MPH program in partnership with the University of Teas at San Antonio College of Business. The UTHealth curriculum across these programs is focused on providing a world-class education on foundational knowledge and best practices on population health. Please do inquire with us about the different program opportunities if you are interested.
In addition to teaching, our faculty at the San Antonio Campus are stellar researchers in a variety of areas, including occupational health, chronic disease, mental health, homelessness, and military health among others. Our faculty work with various local and international partners to identify, develop, and test strategies to improve health in workplaces, clinics, and community settings. We strive to make a positive impact on the communities we serve.
The San Antonio Campus is located at the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country. The city of San Antonio has a large military and veteran population and is often referred to as Military City USA. The city is also home to the five-time NBA champions, the San Antonio Spurs! As the seventh largest city in the United States (1.5+ million population) and the second most populous city in Texas, we offer distinctive cultural and historical experiences and boast a diverse population. We welcome you to visit the campus, enroll in graduate training, and work with us to improve public health.
Warmly,
Jack Tsai, PhD
