About

I am trained with engineering (MS) and statistics (PhD) with research experience in statistical methods for Big Data, real-world EHR data, machine learning, longitudinal data analysis and dynamic models such as differential equation models. My biomedical and health science application areas include clinical trials, bioinformatics and immunology and infectious diseases (HIV and influenza). In particular, I participated in the design and data analysis for more than 15 AIDS clinical trials. My recent research interests include real-world electronic health records (EHR) data and machine learning methods for chronic diseases. I joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) as Dr. D.R. Seth Family Professor and Associate Chair of Biostatistics and Professor of Biomedical Informatics in September 2015. I was appointed as the endowed Betty Wheless Trotter Professor and Chair for the Department of Biostatistics & Data Science, UTHealth School of Public Health (SPH) in 2017. As PI or Co-PI, I have been funded by NIH with R01, training (T32) and center grants since 1998. I have also served as Director for the Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and/or Computational Biology Core for several NIH-funded biomedical program/center grants. In particular, as PI/Co-PI, I have directed the NIH-funded “Center for Biodefense Immune Modeling” from 2005-2015. I have a good publication record with 3 books and more than 180 peer-reviewed papers in top statistical journals such as JASA, Biometrika, Annals of Statistics, Biometrics, Biostatistics; biomathematical/bioinformatics journals such as Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Biosciences, BMC Bioinformatics; and biomedical journals such as Journal of Infectious Diseases, Journal of Virology, and Journal of Immunology.
