From 2007-2023 before joining UTHealth Houston, she worked for a hospital affiliated health coverage provider that offered coverage and health services to Medicaid families. As a Certified Health Education Specialist, she led a variety of pediatric and obstetric initiatives at two Medicaid medical-home clinics. Thompson utilized her training as a Certified Lactation Counselor and taught classes preparing patients for motherhood and encouraging breastfeeding. During flu season, she and her colleagues led the annual Boo to Flu event to promote vaccination, hand-washing, and other preventative measures. She also educated patients about injury prevention, asthma management, healthy eating, and exercise; as a Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor she oversaw the BLS requirements for her clinic colleagues.

At the CHE, Thompson currently works on the Houston Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program grant led by Sandra McKay, MD at UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School and Alexander Testa, PhD UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in San Antonio. This program aims to reduce re-injury among adult firearm violence patients through an educational intervention during their recovery at Memorial Hermann Hospital. With the study currently in the planning phase, Thompson is part of the communication/education core and facilitates the collaboration of community and hospital-based intervention specialists to inform the program’s development and ensure a multifaceted response to violence through a health equity lens.

Thompson obtained her MPH in 2006 in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences from UTHealth Houston School of Public Health. Later that year she was selected as an NIH Cancer Research Training Award Fellow and served her year fellowship in the Health Promotion Research Branch of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, MD.  She is delighted to be back in the research world and thrilled for the opportunity to return to UTHealth Houston!. Over the years she had read reports and studies published by UTHealth Houston. Now participating in research development, she knows the far-reach they can have and is honored to be part of such a motivated and impactful team

Her hobbies include spending time with her husband and two daughters (ages 10 and almost 12). She enjoys outdoor activities and competitively plays golf. She loves travelling and learning foreign languages. Anne Marie speaks fluent French, some Spanish and a bit of Japanese, Italian, and Arabic.
