HEALTH WITHOUT BOUNDARIES

Our Vision: We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to be healthy—without obstacles, caveats, or conditions.

UTHealth Houston School of Public Health is changing the culture of health through excellence in graduate education, research, and engagement. Every aspect of our educational experience puts our core values into action: students learn to collaborate, lead, transform, and diversify the field of public health.

We’ve spent over 50 years developing relationships with communities, institutions, governments, and nonprofit organizations to support our mission of facilitating excellence in public health education, research, and community impact. These relationships extend across the country and the state of Texas, where school locations are deeply embedded into each region. Spanning into the state's major metropolitan areas, including Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio, the School of Public Health works to develop and implement solutions to protect the health of the communities each region serves. We can extend the university's mission by offering different modes of learning at each of these locations, partnered with hands-on research and tangible community outreach.

  • Health Promotion & Behavioral Sciences

    Health Promotion & Behavioral Sciences

The Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences prepares students to work alongside communities to develop, implement and evaluate successful interventions.

Students join our department because they believe that making healthy life choices attainable and appealing is the most effective way to prevent disease and injury. Many times this means combining evidence-informed theories that address public health challenges with the goals and values of the community to create better intervention outcomes. Our faculty literally wrote the book on developing successful interventions, a seminal work that’s used in public health classrooms around the nation. Their expertise not only helps our students build valuable skill sets, such as how to undertake a needs assessment or evaluate a project’s effectiveness but also encourages them to address their own biases and assumptions to achieve better, more sustainable health programs.

  • Management, Policy and Community Health

The people in our classrooms represent nearly every aspect of the healthcare, medical industries and social scientific research as well as health departments, non-profits and other community-based organizations working to improve health and social conditions inside and outside the clinic. Our faculty strive to create a learning environment that flows seamlessly between the outside world and our classroom by drawing on their perspectives and experiences as well as those of our students. Our program enrollees include hospital administrators, clinical professionals, interdisciplinary students and researchers, state health department executives, nonprofit executive directors and policy directors. Their experience enriches our curriculum and creates a culture of engagement and mentor-ship within the department.
