Biostatistics
The Department of Biostatistics and Data Science is the academic home for statisticians and data scientists working to help people live better by translating data into public health knowledge.
We believe that the synergy between statistics and data science has the means to revolutionize the way we improve population health and deliver healthcare services. This intersection drives evidence-based decision-making in both research and industry, and already serves an integral role in enhancing the quality of life for people around the world. We equip our students with the knowledge and experiences needed to thrive in this era of Big Data. Our well-established faculty develop and maintain interdisciplinary networks across the Texas Medical Center, and use these relationships to ensure students have the opportunity to tackle real world challenges as part of their education.
Environmental Science and Occupational Safety
Environmental and occupational health scientists are at the forefront of today’s most critical public health challenges. Whether addressing workplace safeguards during a pandemic or mitigating the threats of extreme weather, aging urban infrastructure, and food-borne outbreaks, those working in environmental health inform the health policies that impact where we live and work. Faculty expertise and leadership span industry, government, and academia. Along with interactive curricula, students obtain hands-on learning and research opportunities that produce tangible results for contemporary public health problems. The environmental and occupational health sciences programs are managed by the Department of Environmental Science and Occupational Safety (ESOS).
Epidemiology
Epidemiologists play a vital role in disease prevention and control by studying the determinants and patterns of disease in populations. Through rigorous coursework, we prepare our students to confront some of the most consequential health conditions affecting our local and global communities. Faculty and graduates of our epidemiology programs are leading experts in both chronic and infectious diseases. Our faculty and researchers spearhead initiatives that help extend life expectancy, advance health equity, improve quality of care, and pave the way for innovations in how we improve the quality of care.
Health Promotion & Behavioral Sciences
The Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences prepares students to work alongside communities to develop, implement and evaluate successful interventions.
Students join our department because they believe that making healthy life choices attainable and appealing is the most effective way to prevent disease and injury. Many times this means combining evidence-informed theories that address public health challenges with the goals and values of the community to create better intervention outcomes. Our faculty literally wrote the book on developing successful interventions, a seminal work that’s used in public health classrooms around the nation. Their expertise not only helps our students build valuable skill sets, such as how to undertake a needs assessment or evaluate a project’s effectiveness but also encourages them to address their own biases and assumptions to achieve better, more sustainable health programs.
Management, Policy and Community Health
The Department of Management, Policy and Community Health strikes a balance between academic rigor and hands-on experience.
The people in our classrooms represent nearly every aspect of the healthcare, medical industries and social scientific research as well as health departments, non-profits and other community-based organizations working to improve health and social conditions inside and outside the clinic. Our faculty strive to create a learning environment that flows seamlessly between the outside world and our classroom by drawing on their perspectives and experiences as well as those of our students. Our program enrollees include hospital administrators, clinical professionals, interdisciplinary students and researchers, state health department executives, nonprofit executive directors and policy directors. Their experience enriches our curriculum and creates a culture of engagement and mentor-ship within the department.
