About
I am a health promotion and behavioral science researcher focused on patient-provider communication and decision making in the context of cancer prevention and control, with a particular focus on cancer survivorship and adolescent and young adult cancer. My background as a pediatric hematology/oncology social worker provided me with hands-on experience supporting, advocating for, and cancer patients and their caregivers. In this role, I had the unique opportunity to observe patient-parent-provider communication and support families as they struggled to make decisions and manage their care. Because of this experience, my research focuses on how to actively engage cancer patients and caregivers to enable them to make informed, value-concordant decisions about their cancer prevention and care with the goal of improving health outcomes. My current work focuses on increasing HPV vaccination among childhood cancer survivors and improving survivorship care for adolescents and young adults (AYAs). Since 2016, I have also served as the Co-Director of Evaluation and Implementation for the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) at UT Health San Antonio.
