About

Dr. Robert Hammarberg is a Faculty Associate in the Department of Management, Policy and Community Health and serves as Assistant Director of Public Health Practice and Engagement. His work focuses on strengthening connections between academic training and real-world public health practice through experiential learning, strategic partnerships, and workforce development initiatives. Dr. Hammarberg helps oversee practicum services, career development, alumni engagement, and professional training programs that prepare students for impactful careers in public health. He plays a central role in expanding collaborative relationships with state and local public health agencies, community organizations, and health systems, supporting the creation of new opportunities for applied practice, student pathways, and agency–university partnerships. He is an active leader in the Gaining Equity in Training for Public Health Informatics and Technology (GET PHIT) program, a nearly $10 million federally funded initiative that builds capacity in the public health informatics workforce. Through this work, he contributes to student and professional training, as well as internship coordination with partners from the public and private sectors. Dr. Hammarberg also leads the School’s ACTion Lab, fostering collaborative applied research, community engagement, and practice-based learning experiences for students and faculty. His expertise includes academic partnerships, workforce development, experiential learning design, curriculum innovation, and student mentorship. He has helped shape several schoolwide initiatives, including the creation of the state's first formally recognized Academic Health Department. He holds a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Community Health Practice from UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Texas A&M University, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business Administration from New York Institute of Technology.
