Taking an Interdisciplinary Approach to Occupational and Environmental Health
The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) strengthens occupational and environmental health education at the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health through specialized, interdisciplinary training and student support. Through its NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center, the SWCOEH offers competitive traineeships to eligible students in existing School of Public Health degree programs who wish to pursue an occupational health focus area.
Traineeships may cover full tuition and fees and provide a monthly stipend. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be accepted into a qualifying School of Public Health degree program, maintain the required course load, and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.
NIOSH funding allows trainees in established MPH and PhD programs to pursue specialized occupational safety and health training, interdisciplinary experiences, and financial support—preparing the next generation of professionals and researchers to protect worker health and well-being.
Interdisciplinary training brings together faculty, students and professionals from multiple fields. Through coursework, collaborative projects, field experiences and research, trainees gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to recognize, evaluate and control workplace and environmental threats to health.
