Smoking rates among adults in the United States have fallen precipitously since the first Great American Smokeout was organized in San Francisco in 1977, falling from over 33% then, to less than 12.5% today. Yet cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the country. UTHealth Houston School of Public Health researchers are developing new and intriguing techniques, utilizing mobile health technology, to help smokers quit.

CHPPR Partners with Texas Health Centers to Implement a Healthy Heart Ambassador Program

The Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research partners with Texas health centers like South Texas Rural Health Services, Inc. to promote the use of the Healthy Heart Ambassador and Self-Measured Blood Pressure programs to help identify, treat and manage high blood pressure and reduce risk factors for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. 


UTHealth Houston researchers begin five-year study into effectiveness and safety of whole blood transfusion

Funded by the National Heart Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the “Trauma Resuscitation with Group O Whole Blood Or Products” (TROOP) trial will enroll 1,200 patients at 12 trauma centers across the United States, to compare whole blood transfusions to blood component therapy, the current standard in trauma transfusions. Enrollment for TROOP will begin in spring 2023.
