Lesson plan overview

The Texas Coronavirus Antibody REsponse Survey (Texas CARES) measures the percentage of volunteer participants in Texas, ages 5-80, who have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 virus. The lesson plans provided are aligned to the survey project and are divided into grade bands:

  • K-2
  • 3-5
  • 6-8
  • 9-12

Components of each lesson plan

  • Teacher background information
  • Health, Science and Math TEKS
  • Key vocabulary
  • Learning targets
  • Directions and keys for the activities
  • Student activities

The activities follow a 5E format

The parts should be done in order, starting with Engage. The Explore and Explain can be done in a back and forth manner as students need information to complete and understand the Explore activity and communicate their findings from the data investigation.

  • Engage: Students get interested and personally involved in the lesson, and the teacher has an opportunity to assess prior knowledge. The activity is scenario based with students collaborating to answer the question and justify their answer.
  • Explore: Students collaborate with other students to build knowledge of the topic by interacting with data. The Explore activity is central to the learning. For all grade levels, this activity utilizes the findings of the researchers as displayed on the interactive Texas CARES dashboard that is updated weekly.
  • Explain: Students build knowledge of the topic and use appropriate vocabulary as they communicate what they have learned. There are student information background slides and a vocabulary activity that can be done as a worksheet or with a suggested engagement strategy.
  • Elaborate: Students use their new knowledge to further communicate understanding. There are health, data and science activity choices.
  • Evaluate: Students demonstrate what they have learned. All grade bands have a quiz in a slide format, as well as a Claims-Evidence-Reasoning option. K-2 has a third Evaluate activity.

Please read through the teacher background information and explore the lesson links before teaching any of the lessons.
