Michael Lemke, PhD, became one of the newest faculty members at the San Antonio location of the school this past year and his research contributes to the work of the Southwest Center for Environmental and Occupational Health. His research areas focus on occupational health hazards for truck drivers who tend to have exceptionally poor health and safety outcomes.

Established in 2003 by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, the annual award is presented to a person in the field of national and international worker health and safety who is an outstanding example of commitment and dedication to creating and disseminating occupational exposure values.

In December, the Bhojani Visiting Scholars Endowment Lecture Series hosted Alberto Caban-Martinez, PhD, DO, MPH of the University of Miami. Dr. Caban-Martinez presented "Turning Up the Heat on Cancer: Insights from the National Firefighter Cancer Initiative".

Anna Holdiman, a NIOSH trainee in Occupational Epidemiology in the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, earned a scholarship to attend New York University’s Center for Opioid Epidemiology Polysubstance Use Symposium in October.
