Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health

Continuing Education

Overview

The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) supports continuing education (CE) activities that leverage the abundant academic and research resources and our commitment to education, research, and service in collaboration with our partners and stakeholders. The goal of the CE program is to support professional development on core and related disciplines by connecting research to practice to promote and protect the health, safety, and well-being of workers and their communities.

Our CE program complements the academic programs in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Epidemiology, Occupational Medicine, and Total Worker Health, and designs courses that meet the needs of the practitioners in occupational and environmental health.  Since 1977, the SWCOEH has provided continuing education courses on current and emerging occupational and environmental health issues to serve the needs of practitioners.

Mission

The mission of the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) Continuing Education (CE) Program is to serve as a training resource for professionals and decision-makers in the occupational and environmental health fields by delivering specialized courses in response to current and emerging training needs.

What we offer

SWCOEH offers online, synchronous and asynchronous courses using the Canvas learning management system or virtual platform. The Hotel of 10,000 Stars is a short documentary film that highlights the people who put food on our Gulf Coast tables, based off and named after an ongoing photo-ethnographic research project led by Dr. Shannon Guillot-Wright. The film documents the voices and experiences of Vietnamese shrimp fishermen and creates an avenue for people to not only hear about how food is caught, produced, sold, and served for their enjoyment, but also learn about the historical significance of their food and tangible solutions to ensure the Gulf Coast shrimping industry is sustainable. Ultimately, this is a story about the people who are tasked with doing the difficult and dangerous work of feeding America. It serves as a window into the supply chain and a complex web of systems that make up this industry, allowing viewers to peek into the lives of the people whose livelihoods and health are forever intertwined with it.
