$2.8m Grant Renewal for Groundbreaking Blood Coagulation Research

Initiated in February 2019, the grant renewal will focus on fibronogen a protein that aids the formation of blood clots in the body, necessary to stop bleeding and heal wounds. Fibrinogen can also contribute to serious health complications such as blocking arterial blood flow, stroke, heart attacks, and pulmonary embolisms.

The Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research partners with Texas health centers like South Texas Rural Health Services, Inc. to promote the use of the Healthy Heart Ambassador and Self-Measured Blood Pressure programs to help identify, treat and manage high blood pressure and reduce risk factors for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. 


UTHealth Houston researchers begin five-year study into effectiveness and safety of whole blood transfusion

Funded by the National Heart Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the “Trauma Resuscitation with Group O Whole Blood Or Products” (TROOP) trial will enroll 1,200 patients at 12 trauma centers across the United States, to compare whole blood transfusions to blood component therapy, the current standard in trauma transfusions. Enrollment for TROOP will begin in spring 2023.
