About the Center for Health Services Research 

Mission

Welcome to the Center for Health Services Research (CHSR). The mission of CHSR is to optimize health care by maximizing health benefits, reducing harms, achieving equity, and improving efficiency.

Center goal

  • We conduct high-impact research that uses a transdisciplinary approach that integrates population science methods from epidemiology, data science, decision science, health economics, and health outcomes research.
  • We engage researchers, clinicians, and community stakeholders to tackle research questions across the disease translation spectrum.
  • We train next-generation population scientists and provide them opportunities and platforms for career development.

Research methods

We conduct trial-based and modelling-based economic evaluation studies to assess interventions with the potential to improve survival, quality of life and reduce the cost of care. We use data analytics in synergy with mathematical (disease simulation) modeling techniques to improve disease prevention, control, and implementation of evidence-based interventions. Our current focus is primarily on cancer prevention, stroke, and mental health. Projects are supported by the US National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and Veterans Affairs. Our expertise covers:

  • Comparative effectiveness, health services research, decision science, simulation modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, econometrics, health equity, and health outcomes.
  • Observational data analysis to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement in disease prevention and control.
  • Development of tools and strategies for improving health services delivery and quality of care.

Research and Projects

The Center for Health Services Research (CHSR) complements other research activities within UTHealth and the School of Public Health by applying basic research on causal relationships, intervention design, and population surveillance to service, system and policy questions.

We provide graduate and postgraduate training, practice opportunities for students & fellows, and collaborative research opportunities with other centers, institutes, and external organizations where knowledge of financing, evaluation, organizational relationships and policy is important. The CHSR collaborates with faculty and students at all UTHealth School of Public Health campuses, the Texas Medical Center, and other public and private organizations.

    Fighting back against the vaping epidemic among youth

    As e-cigarette use by young people reaches epidemic proportions, researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) have received a $3.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to conduct the first-ever assessment on the long-term results of a nationwide nicotine vaping prevention program for youth called CATCH My Breath.
