William “Brett” Perkison, MD, MPH, was the first author on a study of heat illness prevention in outdoor workers. The study examined the effects of removing the medical surveillance component from a heat illness prevention program (HIPP) for outdoor workers in Central Texas.

Jooyeon Hwang, PhD, an associate professor in industrial hygiene for the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) at the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health, was principal investigator on a study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in firefighters. The study found an association between PAH exposure and changes in blood cell components in firefighters, emphasizing the need for improved decontamination protocols and protective measures, particularly for volunteer firefighters.

Dr. William "Brett" Perkison, MD, MPH, presented a poster at the International Conference on Occupational Health in Marrakesh, Morocco in May that discussed the urgent need for workplaces to incorporate both temperature and ambient air pollution levels in to their heat stress prevention programs.

Designed to support pre-doctoral fellows and educational opportunities at UTHealth Houston, the Shreela and Vibhu Sharma Endowment for Excellence in Community Nutrition, Climate Health, and Sustainability, one of many celebrated endowments at the university, has expanded to incorporate environmental matters. Established in 2017 by long-standing university supporters Shreela Sharma, PhD, RDN, LD, and Vibhu Sharma, the endowment recognizes the significance and implications of the environment of community health.

Assistant Professor Jenil Patel, PhD, served as first author of a study that found an increased prevalence of work-related asthma among selected groups of healthcare professionals. The study was published in the January issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM).

Shannon Guillot-Wright and Lacy Davis of UTHealth Houston School of Public Health launched new fishermen research in Louisiana. The research is part of a $660K grant awarded to Guillot-Wright and her team from the Southwest Center for Agricultural Health, Injury Prevention, and Education and CDC/NIOSH, “Addressing Health Disparities among Commercial Fishermen by Implementing a Community-based Intervention.”

Shafali Patel, a master of public health student, is a Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) Trainee in industrial hygiene at UTHealth Houston School of Public Health. Born in India, Patel studied dentistry as an undergraduate making her a prime candidate to complete a summer internship for clinic safety at the John. S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center at UTHealth Houston.
