The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health is expanding its environmental health multidisciplinary research program to address environmental determinants of health. We invite applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant, associate, or full professor level. Competitive salary and start-up resources are available. The position will be located at the UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston, where a fully equipped industrial hygiene laboratory is housed. The position will report to the Department Chair of Epidemiology, Human Genetics, and Environmental Sciences.

With a combined 165 faculty and 1,200 graduate students, UTHealth School of Public Health comprises six campuses located across Texas: Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston. The UTHealth School of Public Health offers multiple master’s and doctoral degree programs. Students can take courses offered through all of the six campuses at the School using TelePresence technology, also known as ITV, which enables interactive teaching across campuses and enhances collaborations among faculty and students.

This position offers the opportunity to join an innovative research team within a recently reorganized center for occupational health and exposome studies and the intellectual space to collaborate with current programs while developing new ideas and research directions. Primary responsibilities include maintaining an independently funded research program in fields related to industrial hygiene or exposome sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to serve in the ABET-accredited industrial hygiene program of the NIOSH-supported Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, provide graduate-level courses in industrial hygiene, and mentor and advise both master’s and doctoral students.

A Ph.D. or Dr.PH. in Industrial Hygiene (IH), Occupational and/or Environmental Health, Environmental Engineering or a related field is required. For advanced rank, five or more years of experience in IH is required. In addition, a history of external research funding is required.

Ideal candidates will have a broad understanding of public health, particularly of epidemiology, toxicology, environmental and occupational sciences. They will also be proficient in the application of research methodologies (assessment techniques, study design, data management) and analytic approaches (risk factor identification and experimental design).

Specifically, we are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Industrial hygiene expertise in occupational and/or environmental exposure assessment.
  • An earned doctoral degree in industrial hygiene or related disciplines in research design and quantitative methods.
  • Certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene is desired.
  • Graduate-level teaching and research with emphasis and experience in industrial hygiene or exposome sciences.
  • A track record of research publications commensurate with academic rank and demonstrating potential for securing external funding.
  • Experience with conducting field-based exposure research in occupational settings.
  • Experienced applicants with a proven research record.
