Live Smart Texas annually hosted World Obesity Day with a summit on the impact of obesity and how to work together to address its many root causes.

Dr. Leah Whigham, Director of the UTHealth Center for Community Health Impact, Secretary/Treasurer & Fellow of The Obesity Society, provided welcoming comments and highlights the importance of World Obesity Day.

Sarah Barlow, MD provide a keynote presentation entitled "The new American Academy of Pediatrics childhood obesity treatment guidelines: The answer to “what is the one thing we can do to address this problem?”' Dr. Barlow has been focused on treating childhood obesity throughout her career. At UT Southwestern and Children’s Health in Dallas as the director for integrated programs in childhood obesity, Dr. Barlow works with a range of programs targeting healthy weight for children, including community programs, primary healthcare programs, and tertiary care.

LST Steering Committee members provided updates about events happening in their areas. These updates were from Health Service Regions 1, 7, 8, 9/10 and Texas AgriLife Extension.

The Partnership for a Healthy Texas, a coalition dedicated to combatting obesity through state policy change, moderated a conversation on obesity. The panel of advocates addressed questions of how to keep obesity-related policies on the agenda and what we have learned about obesity policy over the past two years of the pandemic.

The summit concluded with a presentation and closing remarks by Deanna Hoelscher, PhD, RDN, LD, CNS, FISBNPA.
