July Healthy Summer Challenge

Did you know that youth ages 6-17 years need 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity every day for optimal health and fitness and adults need 150 minutes each week of physical activity that is at least moderate intensity?

This summer, the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living challenges you and your kids to build healthy habits while school is out! Our July Healthy Summer Challenge focuses on keeping you and your family active with 28 ways to get your body moving. Some of our favorites:

  • Have a family dance party: Pick your favorite song and grab your family members because it’s always time to dance! Dancing has several health benefits including better coordination, agility, and flexibility.
  • Build an obstacle course: Indoors or outdoors: Building an obstacle course with items found around you is a fun way to release your creativity. Keep track of your time and see your improvement after each round.
  • Go on a hike: Hiking is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy nature. In addition to physical benefits, spending quality time outdoors reduces stress, calms anxiety, and can lead to a lower risk of depression, according to a Stanford University study. Be sure to bring sunblock and plenty of water!

Looking for more ideas? You can also visit our physical activity toolkit for more ways on how parents, schools, and the community can work together to ensure kids keep active. Move Your Way, a campaign from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, also offers tools, videos, and tips that make it easier to get more active for both kids and adults. Remember, if you are doing activities outside, be sure to wear sunblock and drink plenty of water!

Joining our challenge is easy. Download our pdf below, print it out, and hang it up somewhere you and your kids can see. After completing each challenge, cross it off or put a sticker on it, and see how many you can do this month!
