4 Tricks to Enjoy Your Treats

Published: October 28, 2022

With Halloween right around the corner, many people are looking forward to having a traditional evening of trick-or-treating with friends and neighbors, while others are planning to have a quieter at-home celebration. Regardless of how you plan to spend your Halloween, the ultimate goal is to have a safe, fun holiday that does not involve a sugar hangover!

We've put together a few suggestions to help you and your family enjoy Halloween no matter how you choose to celebrate:

  • If you plan on getting together with neighbors or friends, whether to trick-or-treat or celebrate at home, make sure everyone is feeling healthy! Much of the country is already dealing with an early flu season, high rates of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections, and other viral infections (including COVID-19), so staying home if you’re not feeling well is critical. Catching up on Halloween-themed movies while resting on the sofa may be just what the doctor ordered!
  • If you take the kids trick-or-treating, remember that moderation is the key. One of the best things about Halloween is the treats, so by all means enjoy the sweets, just remember that too much of anything is never a good idea. Let the kids (and the grownups!) set aside a few of their favorite candies and consider donating the rest to charity, including local women’s and children’s shelters and organizations serving military personnel abroad.*
  • If you are handing out treats or hosting a party at home, consider replacing full-sized candy bars with smaller and/or fewer sweets, like individually wrapped bubble gum. For many children, small prizes (pencil toppers, stickers, fun-shaped erasers, etc.) are as good a treat as any piece of candy, so you may want to add non-edible treats to the candy bowl.
  • If you choose to turn off the front porch lights and forego the sweets altogether, you can still enjoy Halloween! Air-popped popcorn, low-sodium pretzels, trail mix, and sliced fruit are all great to snack on while watching Hocus Pocus for the umpteenth time!
