El Paso is one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas, yet it has fewer supermarkets per capita than most major cities. Access to healthy, affordable food is a critical component of a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention, yet many people living in the Paso del Norte region must travel long distances to purchase food or rely on mom-and-pop shops and convenience stores where fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthy, affordable food options are limited.

Parents of children with obesity often agonize about how to help their children be healthier. Obesity treatment is especially tricky in children because the approach cannot be overly restrictive without compromising their growth and development. Now a new program, the Working on Wellness (WOW) program, that is part of the Pediatric Clinic at the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso (TTP El Paso), is doing something about it.

The HEAL Alliance is a combination of new and existing coalitions, task forces, and other groups in the region dedicated to healthy eating and active living.
