October is National Substance Use Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of preventing substance use and promoting healthier communities. At the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living, our experts study tobacco and alcohol abuse prevention, and work to reduce unhealthy and addictive behaviors through education, policy change and research.

RESEARCH AND RESOURCES:
Center resources share strategies for improving substance and alcohol use prevention, particularly among young people. By providing evidence-based tools and insights, the Center aims to empower those on the front lines of prevention to make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of our children and young people.
CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) is a K-8th grade school-based health program designed to promote physical activity, oral health, and healthy food choices and prevent tobacco use and vaping (K-12th grade) ,nicotine, THC and opioid use CATCH transforms a child’s environment, culture, and society by coordinating child health efforts across all aspects of the educational experience: classroom, food services, physical education, and family.
Texas Research-to-Policy Collaboration (TX RPC) Resources provide data-driven informational documents tailored to legislative districts, offering valuable research for developing and implementing health policies across Texas.
Texas Child Health Status Reports are a series of user-friendly materials, including reports and one-pagers, that highlight the status of child health in Texas, with a focus on health disparities. NEW reports are coming soon!
The Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance Study (TATAMS) works to understand what types of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) devices, like e-cigarettes, and other tobacco products, like cigarettes, cigars, and hookah, youth and young adults are using and why they use those products. TATAMS researchers also study the effect of tobacco product marketing and other factors (e.g., product characteristics, intrapersonal and interpersonal influences) on youth tobacco use.
